We’ll review your application and contact you within 10 working days.

If successful, you’ll receive a grant offer letter and a claim form to sign.

Funding is limited. Applying doesn’t guarantee a grant offer.

What happens next

We’ll process your claim and pay the grant directly into your nominated bank account.

MCS certification ensures heat pumps are installed to a recognised quality standard. It shows that installers have the right skills and processes in place.

In Scotland, MCS certification has never been more important. The Scottish Government has a target to fully decarbonise heat in buildings by 2045, as set out in its Heat in Buildings Strategy. This means moving away from fossil fuel heating systems and using clean heat solutions like heat pumps.

Installers must be MCS certified to install heat pumps under government‑funded schemes. This allows customers to access public funding and makes clean heat more affordable.

For installers, MCS certification builds trust with customers, supports Scotland’s clean heat goals, and opens opportunities in a growing market.

Yes. One way to get certified is to install a heat pump in your own home using funding from the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan.  

This hands-on approach helps you learn how to design, install and set up systems, while also giving you the evidence you need to apply for MCS accreditation.

What you need to know

1. Installer declaration

   You must sign a statement to confirm you understand the risk: if the installation doesn’t achieve MCS certification, you won’t get the funding. We don’t offer payment upfront. You’ll only get the funding once you’ve submitted the MCS certificate and all claim documents.

2. Proof of intent to gain MCS certification

   You must provide evidence linking the installation to your MCS application, such as a letter from your certifier.
